If you judged work without checking the relevant evidence, the correction needs to address more than your tone. Identify the inaccurate statement and where it may have affected the employee’s work record or reputation.

01

Name the feedback you are correcting

Refer to the particular statement or assessment. Avoid a vague apology for how the conversation felt if the substance was wrong. Explain the checked fact that changes your earlier conclusion. Do not require the employee to argue the whole case again before you acknowledge it.

02

Separate the correction from a new evaluation

This is not the moment to attach unrelated criticisms to balance the apology. If a separate work concern needs discussion, handle it through the normal process. The inaccurate statement should be corrected on its own merits, not traded against another point.

03

Correct the relevant record and audience

If the feedback appeared in a shared document or meeting, address that context appropriately. Protect private performance information. State what has actually been changed and what remains to be reviewed by an authorized owner. Do not present a request as a completed record correction.

04

Avoid requiring praise for the apology

The employee may remain cautious. Do not ask them to reassure you about your leadership or accept a social invitation to show cooperation. Keep future feedback evidence-based and give them the normal opportunity to respond.

FROM WORDS TO ACTION

Before you send it.

  1. 01

    Verify the inaccurate assessment.

  2. 02

    Acknowledge it directly.

  3. 03

    Correct the relevant record.

  4. 04

    Keep future feedback evidence-based.

A LITTLE MORE CLARITY

Questions worth asking.

Should I add other criticism to make the message balanced?

Keep unrelated feedback separate. It can obscure the correction and make the apology feel conditional.

Is a private apology enough for public criticism?

The relevant public statement or record may also need correction, while keeping private information protected.

A THOUGHTFUL NEXT STEP

Make the apology clear.
Make the next step useful.

Take what is useful. Add your truth. Let your next actions support the apology.
