The proposal still needs a decision. Can we review the evidence separately and keep the discussion focused on the work?

You can regret the way you handled a discussion without pretending the underlying proposal is settled. Be precise about the behavior and give the work issue a separate space.

01

Choose the action you are acknowledging

Name the interruption, dismissive reply or personal comment. Avoid a vague apology that calls the whole conversation unfortunate. The colleague should not need to prove your tone was unfair before receiving a direct acknowledgment.

02

Leave the argument out of the first apology

Do not use the next sentence to repeat why your proposal was correct. A separate discussion can address evidence and decisions. The apology should remain valid even if the colleague continues to disagree with your recommendation.

03

Correct the public part proportionately

If you made an inaccurate claim in a meeting, correct it for the relevant audience. Do not turn the correction into a performance requiring the colleague’s public response. Keep private details out of team channels.

04

Offer a workable next conversation

Ask whether a short task-focused discussion would help. Let the colleague choose ordinary professional distance. They do not have to become a close friend or reassure you that everything is fine before you treat them respectfully.

FROM WORDS TO ACTION

Before you send it.

  1. 01

    Identify the unfair behavior.

  2. 02

    Keep the proposal debate separate.

  3. 03

    Correct any relevant public error.

  4. 04

Respect the colleague’s preferred level of contact.

A LITTLE MORE CLARITY

Questions worth asking.

Does apologizing mean agreeing with the proposal?

No. Own the behavior while discussing the work question separately.

Should I ask the whole team to say it is resolved?

No. Correct what the team needs to know without asking others to pressure a personal response.

A THOUGHTFUL NEXT STEP

Make the apology clear.
Make the next step useful.

Take what is useful. Add your truth. Let your next actions support the apology.
